Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia: Powering Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia is undergoing one of the world’s most ambitious energy transitions. While the Kingdom remains a global leader in oil production, it is rapidly investing in renewable energy as part of Vision 2030 to diversify its economy, strengthen energy security, and reduce reliance on liquid fuels for electricity generation.
At the center of this transformation is the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), led by the Ministry of Energy and implemented through the Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) and the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The program aims to create a balanced electricity mix, with renewables expected to contribute around 50% of the Kingdom’s electricity generation by 2030, alongside natural gas.
Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy strategy is built primarily on solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power. The country’s vast desert landscapes, high solar irradiance, and favorable wind resources make it one of the world’s most attractive markets for utility-scale renewable energy projects. Landmark developments such as Sakaka Solar PV, Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm, Sudair Solar PV, Shuaibah Solar PV, and several projects under the latest procurement rounds have helped establish Saudi Arabia as a global leader in achieving record-low renewable electricity tariffs.
The rapid expansion of renewable energy is also driving economic diversification. Billions of dollars are being invested in new generation capacity, while local manufacturing, engineering services, construction, operations, and maintenance industries continue to grow. The renewable sector is creating thousands of skilled jobs and supporting the Kingdom’s broader local content objectives by encouraging domestic production of solar modules, wind components, electrical equipment, and energy storage systems.
Beyond electricity generation, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a global hub for clean energy technologies. Large-scale battery energy storage systems are being deployed to improve grid flexibility, while green hydrogen projects, including the world-scale development in NEOM, are expected to make the Kingdom one of the leading exporters of clean hydrogen in the coming decade. These initiatives complement investments in smart grids, transmission infrastructure, and advanced energy management systems.
Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy market is expected to remain one of the fastest-growing globally. Continued project tenders, falling technology costs, expanding private-sector participation, and strong government support are accelerating deployment across the Kingdom. As renewable capacity continues to increase, Saudi Arabia is transforming from a country known primarily for its hydrocarbons into a major player in the global clean energy transition, demonstrating that renewable energy will play a central role in achieving its long-term economic and sustainability goals.
